Extensive community consultation to develop Sport Policy One (SP1)

Following the official launch of the Sports Policy One’s development in March 2009, an extensive consultation program was developed and implemented from April to June 2009.

The Towards a Sport and Active Recreation Policy: An Issues Paper; provided the scope for discussion and community feedback on key focus areas, critical issues and challenges unique to Territory sport and active recreation environment.

Methods applied to gather information were:

  • Face to face meetings comprising small groups and larger forums, conducted at numerous locations across the Northern Territory including:
    • Nguiu, Warruwi, Yirrkala, Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs, Hermannsburg, Yuendumu, Papunya, Katherine and Tennant Creek;
  • Written submissions;
  • Online surveys and submissions; and
  • Research of policies developed in other jurisdictions both nationally and internationally.

A total of 267 people contributed feedback, not including a variety of Government staff members from all three tiers of Government.

Following this extensive consultation, the Territory Government produced the draft Sports Policy One document.The draft Policy was released for community consultation in late 2010 and all community feedback was taken into consideration in the development of the final document. Sports Policy One was released by the Territory Government on 12 June 2011.
