Sports Policy One
The Territory Government’s Sport Policy One (SP1) was released on 12 June 2011.
An extensive consultation process was used to develop this Policy, with community feedback sought on the draft Sports Policy One document in late 2010, and the release of an Issues Paper in 2009. Feedback and input was received from the general public, communities, sporting bodies, shire councils and government agencies.
SP1 is the first step in establishing a cohesive and strategic approach to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the Territory Government’s role in facilitating the development of the sports industry.
SP1 is a critical component of the Territory Government’s strategy to achieving its vision of:“Territorians having a life long involvement in sport and active recreation.” It also links to the Government’s Territory 2030 objectives in many areas, including increasing participation level of athletes and teams at national levels, increasing the level of volunteering in the Territory and providing access to sporting facilities for all Territorians.
Sport is intrinsic to the Territory way of life and provides numerous physical, social and economic benefits.
SP1 targets four focus areas:
- People – Territorians involved in sport in anyway
- Partnerships – unifying sport and stakeholders
- Participation pathways – the standard that sport is engaged in, ranging from social to elite etc
- Places – environment where the structured sport is played.
From these four areas, key actions have been identified such as an Active Recreation Policy, suite of programs to assist in the development of officials, risk management planning for facilities and events, gathering baseline data on remote community facilities, and increasing participation.
SPI will provide the community and sporting organisations with clear direction on how the Territory Government will assist in the delivery of all aspects of sports, from participation to events, and facilities to volunteer support.
SP1 is designed to be regularly evaluated, reviewed and updated.
