The Northern Territory Insitute of Sport (NTIS) Southern Region Program was established in Alice Springs in 1996. The program aims to take a whole-of-Territory approach to identifying, developing and supporting the Territory's elite and identified developing athletes. It provides athletes with coaching, finance and support services, depending on the level of their scholarship, to enable athletes to develop their sporting potential in their home environments.
The NTIS Southern Region Program delivers National standard quality coaching, training and competition opportunities in the sports of Athletics, Tenpin Bowling, Cricket, Cycling, AFL Football, Hockey, Netball, Swimming, Tennis, Rugby Union and Rugby League along with other individual based sports. It also provides athletes with support services such as athlete career and education guidance, nutrition, sports psychology, strength and conditioning, sports science, sports medicine and assists in providing access to the highest quality training facilities available.
The NTIS scholarship athletes receive skills coaching from the NTIS Coach / NTIS Satellite Coach or the Sport’s Development Officer, who networks closely with the NTIS Coach. Individual and group sessions are delivered for these athletes with some sessions combining with underpinning development groups.
Underpinning the NTIS Southern Region Program are a number of regional development training squads generally controlled by the Sport’s Development Officer's or an NTIS Satellite Coach. Generally the NTIS Head Coach will visit the region and work with these groups several times a year to ensure the development squad program is progressing the athletes toward an NTIS scholarship and its identified pathway. Identified athletes from these groups are invited to attend selected NTIS education sessions, to further assist them with their development, knowledge and training culture.
The NTIS Southern Region Program also offers athletes assistance when they are faced with the option of relocating to enhance their sporting career. The Athlete Relocation Policy provides support through a set of protocols for athletes, their parents and coaches to assist the athlete's transition.
