Visitors and Volunteer Program

Visitors

Visitors to the Herbarium are welcome, however contact should first be made to arrange an appointment with relevant staff. Tours of the Herbarium can be arranged in advance for secondary and territory institutions and other interest groups. Interstate and international botanists are welcome to access the collection and facilities by prior arrangement. The Curator of the Herbarium should be contacted to organise dates, times and possible equipment required.

A reference collection of native, naturalised and cultivated plants species is provided and available for identification purposes for scientists, consultants, students and interested members of the public at both Darwin and Alice Springs (note: Alice Springs do not have a reference collection for cultivated plants). The use of the reference collection must be made by prior appointment. Access to the main collection is normally restricted to bona fide scientists undertaking research and must be arranged with the Curator.

Volunteer Program

The Northern Territory Herbarium has an active volunteer program which is vital to achieving some of the day to day Herbarium tasks. Volunteers include members of the general public not necessarily having a botanical background, as well as interested students and professionals. Volunteers are encouraged to interact with Herbarium staff and are included in our social activities.
Herbarium volunteers perform important functions including mounting of specimens, databasing of accession details, filing of specimens and occasional one day field trips.
All volunteers are provided with the training required to undertake the various activities. If you are interested in volunteering some of your time at the Herbarium please talk to our volunteer co-ordinator.
