Library

The small library held at the Northern Territory Herbarium consists mainly of publications pertaining to the naming and descriptions of both native and naturalised plants found in northern and central Australia.

As the Herbarium was only established in 1954 the library lacks many original titles predating that time. However, major earlier references such as George Bentham’s Flora australiensis, Robert Brown’s Prodromus and Candolle’s Prodromus are housed, these usually being facsimiles or on microfiche.

Most post-1950 Australian floras, including Flora of Central Australia, Flora of the Kimberley Region, the on-going Flora of Australia, and the various State floras such as the Flora of New South Wales are held. With many of our genera, and sometimes species, also being found outside of Australia we also hold relevant publications such as the Flora of Tropical East Africa and Flora Malesiana.

May of our books are essential references for taxonomists and may also be difficult to replace should they go missing. As such, they are mostly unavailable for loan to the general public but may be viewed at the Herbarium. However, research workers based at other herbaria and research institutions may be able to formally borrow books and volumes of journals, or receive scans of appropriate pages, by making enquiries via the NRETAS library or by contacting the library directly library.nretas@nt.gov.au
