Non-threatened categories

More than 500 changes are proposed among non-threatened categories that involve plant taxa.  A summary listing is not given because of this large number.  Most are because when IUCN criteria were first applied to NT plants following gazettal of TPWCA in 2000, cases of high taxonomic uncertainty were treated as IUCN ‘not evaluated’, that is no attempt was made to the evaluate distribution, abundance and threats for these taxa. However, since that time it has become evident that IUCN recommend the use of the ‘data deficient’ category for taxa that are ‘known’ even if how the taxon name should be applied is unclear, the species concept may include more than one species or it is not possible to apply the taxon concept because herbarium specimens are on loan and unavailable for curation and there are no other data. Consequently, some 245 changes from not evaluated to data deficient and other categories are proposed in the current review to bring application of the data deficient category in NT into line with standard usage. In addition, 145 taxa have been added to the NT checklist since the previous review and these are evaluated for the first time. Another 123 of the changes proposed are between other non-threatened categories (primarily data deficient and other categories).

The justifications for these changes are given in three documents:

Other taxa considered by panel, but no change recommended or listing criteria changed.
