Threatened Species
The Biodiversity Conservation unit of the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts is charged under section 29 of the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2000 with classifying the conservation status of wildlife species in the Northern Territory. Those species that are classified as “Extinct in the Wild”, “Critically Endangered”, “Endangered”, “Vulnerable”, “Near threatened” and “Data deficient” are the primary concern of the Threatened Species group within NRETAS.
The list of threatened species in the NT was reviewed in 2006 and gazetted in February 2007. An information sheet for each threatened species listed in the NT can be downloaded (and species listed under the Commonwealth EPBC Act) from the Threatened Species List page. Review of the NT Threatened Species List: 2010-11
The second round of consultation on the proposed changes to the List has now closed. All nominations and suggestions received will be considered by an expert review panel, including members from Charles Darwin University (CDU), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Fisheries, The NT Herbarium, The Marine and Coastal Conservation Unit, Biodiversity North and Biodiversity South. Recommendations from the panel will be incorporated into a revised NT Threatened Species List and released later this year.

Activities of the Threatened Species Unit
The threatened species group carries out a wide range of activities involving plants and animals across the Northern Territory including:
- Intensive management of species in predator-proof enclosures
- Translocation of highly-threatened species either within the Territory (e.g. to offshore islands) or to other states
- Surveys and monitoring of specific threatened species
- Detailed studies of the ecology of particular species
- Development of management guidelines aimed to improve the conservation status of threatened species
- On-ground management actions.
