Mataranka Water Advisory Committee
In early 2008 a public meeting was held in Mataranka to discuss who the community thought would best represent the Mataranka community on an advisory committee. From this meeting, nominations for individual representatives were provided to the Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage for approval.
The Mataranka Water Advisory Committee (MWAC) members were appointed in June 2008. As described in the terms of reference the aims of MWAC were:
- To participate in decision making about water resource management by identifying, discussing and making recommendations to Government on matters regarding water resource management in the Mataranka Area.
- Recommend the volume of water resources allocated to each of the declared beneficial uses.
- Recommend framework for the granting of licences to take groundwater from the Mataranka Area.
- Recommend a water resources investigation program directed at assessing the groundwater resources contained within the Mataranka Area.
- To advise Government on policy matters and regional development issues that may impact on the sustainable management and development of groundwater use in the Mataranka Area.
- To assist in the development and review of the draft Tindall Limestone Aquifer, Mataranka Water Allocation Plan and community consultation arrangements.
- To assist with the determination of beneficial uses and water allocations under the NT Water Act.
