Voluntary Bore Metering Project
Questions & Answers | Maps | Publications |
The Northern Territory Government has been undertaking a project to obtain information about ground water consumption and management in the Darwin rural and Daly region.
Metering started in the dry season of 2007. The Northern Territory Government called for volunteers to participate in having a free water meter installed to their bore. It was anticipated that the information obtained from groundwater consumption, through the installation of these free bore metres, will allow for improved planning through analysis of real data. Improved planning will ensure the Darwin rural and Daly regions will continue to have water now and in the future.
The metering project involves the collection of bore water usage data off all meters on a monthly basis. It was anticipated that the program would cease in 2009, however, due to a limited amount of consistent data, we've been lucky enough to have most of our volunteers providing data. Thanks to our participating volunteers, we have been able to capture and analysis a full 3 years worth of data.
From 2007 to 2009, this project was funded by the Australian Government Water Fund, through the Water Smart Australia Program, which is a shared commitment to water reform between Australian Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments.
