Support to Libraries
Northern Territory Library (NTL) provides a range of services to libraries in the Northern Territory. These services include support for:
- Online Resources include information databases available via the iPortal, consortia purchases and database license agreements. For details contact Marilyn Hawthorne on 8922 0758.
- Virtua, the Territory-wide library management system. See the Linnet Support site (password required) for details including contact information for the Virtua Team.
- Public Libraries including: operational funding to Councils; support and professional development opportunities for public library staff including coordination of the twice yearly meeting of PLNT (Public Libraries NT). NTL also directly manages two joint-use libraries, Taminmin Community Library at Humpty Doo and Nhulunbuy Community Library.
- Libraries and Knowledge Centres and Community Libraries including: operational funding to Shire Councils, advice, training and support for Community Library Officers. For further information contact Gibby Maynard on 8922 0741

Public Libraries in the NT
Northern Territory Library works in partnership with municipal libraries
to enhance and support the delivery of library and information services
in the Northern Territory (NT).
Its role is to:
- Develop
library and information services in the NT that reflect current
organisation and government policies, future directions, environmental
changes and client needs.
- Provide leadership and
ensure effective operation of the Public Library Network NT (PLNT)
through assistance, strategic planning and coordination of Network
meetings.
- Participate in national library networks to enhance and support the delivery of library services in the NT.
- Provide appropriate support and guidance to Public Library Services staff.
- Maintain the shared catalogue (Virtua) and provide support via the LINNet Support site.
- Northern Territory public library promotions, such as the “@ your library” campaign
- Development of current law resources for public libraries, including the NT Legal Information Toolkit
- Early literacy programs and resources
- Mylanguage Portal
- Assisting NT public libraries in delivering indigenous library services
Review of Services to Public Libraries in the Northern Territory
The Northern Territory Library (NTL) identified the need for a Review of Services to Public Libraries in the Northern Territory so the Public Library Coordination Committee (PLCC) was established by the Minister for Local Government to review possible models and undertake consultation with stakeholders. Preliminary consultations were undertaken with Municipal and Community Councils.Other Services
- NTL provides professional development and training for library staff as well as advice and support on all aspects of library management including staff selection, building design, consortia purchases, database license agreements and the Locate Your Library website.
