Intervention Guide

In June 2007 the Northern Territory Government released the report: Northern Territory Board of Inquiry into the Protection of Aboriginal Children from Sexual Abuse (Also known as Ampe Akelyernemane Meke Mekarle “Little Children are Sacred”). This report prompted a reaction from the Howard Federal Government who likened the situation of Indigenous child abuse to a “national emergency”.
What followed was a very controversial response by the Federal Government. Legislation was passed within days of the Northern Territory “Little Children are Sacred” report to intervene in the areas of welfare payments to indigenous families, alcohol and pornography bans, health checks on Indigenous children and allowing access to Indigenous land. |
