Remembering Territory Families

Remembering Territory Families is a unique history project, an initiative of the Northern Territory Government to remember and celebrate the lives of Territory families who have made significant contributions to our culture and history.  The cultural diversity of the Northern Territory is what makes it a truly distinctive place, from the different Indigenous groups who have lived here for thousands of years, to the diverse cultures of families who came to make the Territory their home.

In the lead-up to the 2008 election, the Northern Territory Government announced a social history project to highlight the unique history of the Northern Territory and to celebrate the lives of Territory families who have contributed to our social, cultural and economic development.

The Project

Research on the project began in July 2009.  The Northern Territory Library engaged Dr Mickey Dewar to curate the exhibition. She  worked closely with the Northern Territory Archive Service to bring together materials from their collections to feature in the exhibition.  Northern Territory Library and the Northern Territory Archive Service have also worked together to collect new oral history recordings with families who feature in the exhibition. A series of Oral History Workshops were held in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, to teach recording skills to community members and enabling them to record their own unique histories.

Online Exhibition

The outcome of this project is the Remembering Territory Families online exhibition, which was launched mid-2010.  The online exhibition offers Territorians the opportunity to contribute their own unique family stories and will share these stories with Territorians, the wider Australian community and with an international audience.
