NT Heritage Register
The Northern Territory has a unique and diverse natural and cultural heritage that is recognised and protected through a variety of heritage lists and registers.
The NT Heritage Register is established under the NT Heritage Conservation Act and contains details about all declared heritage places and objects. It also includes details of interim conservation orders, conservation management plans and heritage agreements.
The Register is now available in a searchable on-line format where you can find information about all places and objects that have been nominated to the Register, not just ones that have been declared.
It is important to note the following:
- Although this on-line version of the Register is a useful source of information, for authoritative advice on whether a place or object is protected by the Heritage Conservation Act, you should contact the Heritage Branch on 8999 5051.
- There are some Aboriginal sites on the Register where the location of the place and other details will be 'non-public'.
- There are a great many 'prescribed archaeological places' that enjoy automatic protection under the Act which are not included on the Register; contact the Heritage Branch for further information.
- Many of the declared heritage places and objects on the Register are privately owned, and the public does not have any special right of access to these places. If you wish to visit any privately owned places you should first obtain permission from the owners.
Some of the most important heritage places in the Northern Territory are subject to Commonwealth heritage legislation. In some cases, this means that such places are not on the NT Heritage Register at all.
