Community Consultation

The Department seeks comment from individuals in relation to the various proposals that are currently up for review.

Those people who have an interest in, or live near a proposed development can have valuable knowledge that provides a vital contribution to both the understanding management of a region or locality.

The following is a list of proposals open for comment and also those that are closed.

Meat Processing Facility (Abattoir)
The Australian Agricultural Company Ltd proposes to develop a meat processing facility in the Livingston locality, 50km south of Darwin. The Northern Territory Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage determined that the proposal requires assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act at the level of Public Environmental Report (PER). Guidelines for the preparation of the PER were issued on 13 January 2012. The PER is available for comment.

Mt Todd Gold Project

Vista Gold Australia Pty Ltd proposes to re-establish and expand the Mt Todd Gold Mine, located 55km north of Katherine and 250km south of Darwin. The NT Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage has determined that the proposal requires assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act at the level of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Draft EIS Guidelines are available for comment.

Draft Weed Management Plans
The Territory Government invites the community to comment on the draft Weed Management Plans for Prickly Acacia, Mesquite and Chinee Apple. The Weeds Management Act 2001 requires each of these weed species to be eradicated.You are invited to comment on any or all of the following draft Plans:

- Mesquite (Prosopis species
- Chinee Apple (Ziziphus mauritiana)

Pastoral Land Clearing Applications

Revised applications for clearing of regrowth vegetation were lodged with the Pastoral Land Board in November 2010 for Tipperary Station (9128 ha) and Douglas Station (3889 ha). The Minister for Lands and Planning has determined that the proposals do not warrant formal assessment under the Environmental Assessment Act.

The Heritage Advisory Council invites public comments on the proposal to the Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage to include the following place in the Northern Territory Heritage Register pursuant to Section 24 of the Heritage Conservation Act:

The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory in pursuance of section 14(2) of the Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, gives notice that a report has been prepared regarding the declaration of part of the Wambardi Aboriginal Land Trust described as NT Portion 6803A, containing an area of 14,880 hectares, to become part of Judbarra/Gregory National Park.

Interested persons are invited to make representations in connection with the report.

Anurrete Aboriginal Land Trust, proposed Davenport Range National Park

Flora River Nature Park is located 122 km south-west of Katherine. It conserves a 25 kilometre stretch of the Flora River and attracts approximately 1200 visitors each year.

Gregory (Jutpurra) National Park and Gregory's Tree Historical Reserve - Draft Joint Management Plan
The community is invited to provide feedback on the Draft Plan for Gregory National Park.

Gregory National Park is the largest park in the Northern Territory parks estate and is ranked as one of the highest value parks for biodiversity conservation. It is also a living cultural landscape for seven language groups and a prime remote, scenic, 4WD, fishing and bush camping location.

Australian Native Vegetation Framework

The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, on behalf of the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council, is seeking your comment on the draft Australia’s Native Vegetation Framework.

The draft Framework is an important nation policy document that outlines how all Australian governments will work collaboratively with community, business and science organisations to sustainably manage native vegetation across Australia.

The Government has a long-standing commitment to review the Northern Territory Heritage Conservation Act 1991. In February 2010 an important milestone was reached in the review of the legislation. An 'exposure draft' of a bill for a new Heritage legislation for the Northern Territory was released for public comment.

The West MacDonnell National Park is one of Australia’s greatest natural assets and home to rare and threatened native wildlife. The Northern Territory Government, in partnership with Traditional Owners, have closed community feedback for the draft Plan.


Comment has been received on these draft Plans and amendments made for the final Plans, which will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly following transfer of title to the Park’s Traditional Owners.

Community feedback on the draft Plan for Watarrka National Park has closed.Watarrka National Park is an important conservation area and major tourist attraction of Australia’s Red Centre, and includes the spectacular Kings Canyon.
