Careers at NRETAS

The Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport plays a crucial role in the Northern Territory’s social development and the protection of our heritage and biodiversity, working for the conservation of the Territory.

We offer a range of entry-level employment programs to ensure that we have suitably qualified and experienced employees to continue protecting and preserving our natural and cultural assets into the future, provide opportunities for Territorians to participate in sport and recreation.

Indigenous Employment and Career Development Strategy

The Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport recognises that in order to provide quality service to all Territorians, its workforce should reflect the community it serves. For this reason an Indigenous Employment and Career Development Strategy (IECDS) has been developed which is based on the principles of fairness, social justice and pragmatism (the need for practical real-world long-term outcomes).

This IECDS aims to achieve:

  1. An enhanced Department status as an attractive employer.
  2. Increasing the percentage of Indigenous people employed in the Department. We aim to have 12% of our employees as Indigenous by the end of 2011 and 14% of our employees as Indigenous by the end of 2012.
  3. Greater retention by ensuring policies and processes supporting increased retention rates of Indigenous employees across all divisions.
  4. Communication and recognition of achievements, and acknowledge success efforts against the IECDS.

“As a Department, NRETAS is the largest contributor of the Northern Territory’s ‘social fabric’ (specifically for Indigenous people this includes the essentials of identity, self esteem and well being) through arts, music, sport and recreation, environmental protection, language development and Indigenous knowledge.”
