Overview

EnvironmeNT Grants are available annually to schools, community groups, local government and industry associations for environmental projects and educational activities in the Territory.

 

In 2012-2013 five categories are available to applicants.  Climate change mitigation and adaptation, is a category that allows projects to go further than greenhouse gas reduction, monitoring and education, and instead focus on adaptation to new climatic conditions or to the new carbon economy.  Other categories focus on developing better awareness and understanding of our precious water and wildlife resources and how to use them wisely. Not only are natural resources important but the waste we generate contains many resources that can be re-used. Projects are encouraged that help in increasing recycling and minimising waste. Protecting our resources is also included in the invasive species management category as these species have a large impact on the resources we strive to protect.

In 2012-2013 grant scheme has three components:

Eligible

The following eligible non-government organisations will conduct all or most of their work in the Territory, have published audited accounts and annual reports and not retain unacquitted funding from previous NT Government grants:

School grants

Eligible
Government or non-government schools;

Year levels: Early years, primary, middle and secondary (pre-school to year 12).

School type: Area school, community school, group school, pre/primary/middle/high school, senior college, special purpose school and special school.

Operational Grants

Operational Grants are available to non-government environment organisations providing significant ongoing environmental services in the Northern Territory. New submissions are invited for three year Operational Grants which are paid annually.

Written submission agreements will be negotiated with successful organisations outlining the amount to be received and accountability requirements. There are no application forms available as application is by written submission only.

Administration

The Grants program will be administered through the Environment and Heritage Division of the Department of Natural Resources Environment, the Arts and Sport

An assessment panel consisting of technical officers with expertise in sustainability and wildlife issues will assess grant applications and provide recommendations to the Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage. The final decision on grant applications will rest with the Minister.

Timing

Applications for grants will be sought once per year concurrently in March/April and funding decisions announced in June/July.

Projects undertaken with these grants must be completed within twelve months of their starting date and a Project Report submitted not later than three months after the agreed completion date.

Amount of funding available

The total funding pool for this program will be $731 000 in 2012-2013

Individual Project Grants will not be capped but applicants are encouraged to keep applications within $10 000. Grants in excess of this amount will be considered where projects have exceptional merit.

School Project Grants will be capped at $2000 per project.

Operational Project Grants will be negotiated upon application.
