Collection Depots and Points
Where can I take my empty containers?
Help your Collection Depot. Only return containers that are eligible, clean and not crushed to get your 10 cent refund.
Collection Depots have been established in various locations across the Territory. Full details are below.
More Collection Depots and Collection Points are expected to start up now the scheme has commenced and some existing depots will make arrangements to service outlying communities.
Taking empty containers to collection depots
- Collection depots that accept the return of approved containers must pay the 10 cent refund amount for each container to the person presenting the containers, provided that the containers were purchased in the Northern Territory and after 3 January 2012.
- To help your local collection depot, only return approved containers that are clean and are not crushed. Operators of collection depots are not required to accept any container that is unclean, contaminated or has a lid on it.
- If you return more than 500 containers to a collection depot within any 48 hour period, you will need to sign a declaration form stating that the containers were purchased in the Northern Territory and were purchased after 3 January 2012
- Collection Depots have been established in various locations across the Territory. Full details are below. It is expected that more collection depots will commence operating in the near future, including in remote areas.
Other options for returning containers
A range of options are available for community groups, charities, not-for-profit organisations, schools and sporting groups to become involved in the scheme. Some ideas include:
- establishing a ‘donation collection point’ which enables people to donate eligible containers to an organisation, such as a charity, with any proceeds from the return of the containers being used to fund the activities of the organisation;
- establishing a ‘collection point’, being an arrangement or system to collect empty eligible containers from a number of persons and share the costs of returning the containers to an approved collection depot and the total refund amounts among the persons who provided the containers.

What about Territorians that don’t have easy access to a Collection Depot?
Cash for Containers is a Territory-wide scheme but there will always be circumstances where the nearest Collection Depot is some distance away.
For remote Territorians, eligible containers can be collected and stored until a visit is planned to a community with a Collection Depot or they can establish a Collection Point in their community.
